Determine if your project needs IRB review

Does my Project Require IRB Review and Approval?

There are two main questions to answer that will help to determine
if IRB review is required:

Is it research?
Does it involve human subjects?

Helpful definitions to determine if IRB review is required:

Research

Research means a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.

Human Subjects

A living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research obtains:

Data through intervention or interaction with the individual
- Intervention includes both physical procedures by which data are gathered (for example, venipuncture) and manipulations of the subject or the subject's environment that are performed for research purposes.
- Interaction includes communication or interpersonal contact between investigator and subject.
Identifiable private information
- Private information includes information about behavior that occurs in a context in which an individual can reasonably expect that no observation or recording is taking place. Private information must be individually identifiable (i.e., the identity of the subject is or may readily be ascertained by the investigator or associated with the information).

Prepare the required research documents

The Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) requires that the IRB review any information a potential participant may see or hear in relation to a research study.

The following documents are required for each study submitted in Mentor IRB:

Recruitment Materials (I.E. Flyers, Scripts, Email Messages, Etc.)
Informed Consent Document (Required When Recruiting Participants 18 Years Of Age And Older)
Informed Assent Form (Required Only If Recruiting Participants Under 18 Years Of Age)
Parental Permission (Required Only If Recruiting Participants Under 18 Years Of Age)
Data Collection Instruments (Surveys, Interview Questions, etc.)

Letters of Support (Required only if the study will recruit or take place outside of NKU)
