Dear Campus Community:

It is with great sadness that I share news of the passing of Habib Sanogo last week after a short battle with cancer. Habib was a member of the counseling staff in the Department of Health, Counseling and Student Wellness, and will be remembered for his humble spirit and genuine care for his clients. Even during his last days, he messaged to express how deeply he missed his students and colleagues.

Habib’s coworkers remember him as a team player, a gentle soul and a man of faith. He was an avid sports fan who cherished his involvement as an intramural soccer coach and loved the Los Angeles Lakers. Born in Côte d'Ivoire, Habib came to the United States at 16, quickly realizing his passion for providing mental health care and guidance.

He began his career at a community mental health center providing care for adults and children struggling with mental illness, addiction and trauma before coming to NKU in October 2020. His primary focus was to serve underrepresented and marginalized populations, but Habib loved working with any student in need.

Losing a member of our campus community impacts each of us. Please remember that it is always OK to ask for the help you need. University Wellness provides the Employee Assistance Program through Aetna and offers online resources and counselors, which are available anytime.

My sympathies go out to Habib’s friends and family, as well as the entire NKU community. He will be missed and dearly remembered.

Sincerely,
Ashish Vaidya
